An Afternoon of Jazz for the Kids — with a Little Shakespeare, Too

Child-focused performance Saturday lets kids ask questions and even try out the instruments

Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra

Attention music-lovin' kids!

Join Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra for a matinee performance of selections from Duke Ellington's Such Sweet Thunder

A lover of Shakespeare, Duke Ellington composed the Such Sweet Thunder Suite as a tribute to the Bard. In this performance, SRJO teams up with local thespians. Each movement—including Lady Mac, Sonnet for Sister Kate, and The Star-Crossed Lovers—evokes favorite Shakespearean characters or quotes. Guest actors present selections from the plays and sonnets that inspired Ellington to create the musical work.

If this sounds like something your little musician would be into, there's more. Jazz4Kids Concerts are special events that give kids a chance to hear jazz performed live. The one-hour matinee performances are done without an intermission, and the concert includes instrument demonstrations and questions from the audience.

Kids are also invited to explore a hands-on "petting zoo" instrument display courtesy of Kennelly Keys Music, which will be in the lobby before the concert beginning at 3:30 PM.

The matinee is free, but will sell out quickly, so we recommend reserving your spot now.
