City Mouse: a smart kids' boutique

Joshua Huston

When Donna DeRousie opened City Mouse in 2010, children's clothing was a sideline to her photography business.

"We'd have mums racing downtown to buy clothes for the shoot. You know how it is — people are busy, they'd put it off to the last minute."

What began as a photo studio has become a smart kids' boutique, featuring carefully considered products, responsible and local companies, good design and organic materials. Future plans include a baby registry and age-appropriate clothing for preteens.

"After four years, customers have become friends and part of the family. It's beautiful."

And it's truly a family business. Relocating from Australia to West Seattle with her husband Jamie, Donna's passion for photography began when their daughter Lane was born. Now 9, Lane models and assists. Jamie keeps the books.

Named for one of Donna's favorite childhood books, City Mouse is a fresh and resourceful take on kids' fashion and photography.
