Eat your (Scandinavian) heart out



 

Pancakes just taste better with a crowd. Especially when they’re feather-light Swedish pancakes festooned with fresh whipped cream and tart lingonberries, and when that crowd is hundreds strong, toes tapping to the thrum of merry fiddles as folk dancers twirl and flounce.

The first Sunday morning of each month, 500 to 700 pancake fans of all ages file into Seattle’s Swedish Club, just as many of them have since the mid-1990s, when the club’s perennially popular fundraiser began. There’s mingling galore around the many tables; babies are passed and snuggled; newcomers can’t help but gawk at the boats afloat on Lake Union below. 

Breakfast runs from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and costs $9 per person ($5 for kids 5 to 12, and free for kids younger than 5) and includes Swedish pancakes with lingonberries or strawberries; ham; and hot coffee, milk, or orange juice (and seconds!).
