Free Summer Meal Program for Children




The Seattle Human Services Department's Summer Food Service Program, which offers free meals and snacks for kids, kicks off today and runs through Friday, Aug. 26.

Thousands of local children and teens will enjoy free breakfasts, lunches and snacks this summer through the program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Approximately 90 sites across the city, including several community centers and parks, are participating (for a complete list, click here).

With a recent $225,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation, this year's program will includes several enhancements such as story times and free books from The Seattle Public Library, bags of fresh produce from local farms for families to take home for the weekend, and a Saturday lunch pilot project. In addition, the Simplified Summer Food Program for children, sponsored by Metro Parks Tacoma in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will serve free meals to kids younger than 19 years of age.
