Finding the right place to work out after kids can be a challenge. Parents need a studio that offers childcare or encourages them to bring their kids along to the workout. Finding these mythical places can sometimes be a challenge. Seattle’s Child has put together a list of parent-friendly fitness programs across the Seattle region with either childcare or programs that encourage you to bring your kids along for the ride because bringing back fitness is important.
Looking for a workout where you can bring your kid? FIT4MOM is your place. Their nationally certified teachers lead hour-long sessions through circuit training, sprints, squats and push-ups, often using strollers (with your baby or tot in it) for stabilization and balance. Most workouts are done in the great outdoors but some programs offer indoor locations. Individually owned, FIT4MOM offers three great programs - Fit4Baby (pregnancy), Stroller Strides (postpartum) and Body Back (advanced postpartum). Their multiple locations throughout the great Seattle region mean there is a FIT4MOM near you. All first classes are free so you can try it before you buy it. With eight locations throughout Seattle, West Seattle and the Eastside, barre3 is the workout you have been looking for. Classes are easily modified and all studios offer childcare options for a small fee. Each class varies but maintains a defined structure of a warm-up followed by leg work, combo work, core exercises and a cool-down. The classes use props such as a core ball, hand weights, stretchy band and yoga mat which are all provided by the studio. All you need is a water bottle, a good attitude and a willingness to work. barre3 focuses on all bodies and stages of life but has a special place in their hearts for moms, especially new moms. "Anyone can do this low-impact sequence and see dramatic results," says their website. "It doesn't matter if you're 20 or 75, if you're a turbo athlete or you haven't worked out in years, if you have back pain or a knee injury, if you're pregnant or just had a baby. No matter who you are, barre3 will help you lose weight, build strength, and transform your entire body."
Find free workouts with The November Project at 6:29 a.m. on Wednesdays in Gasworks and 6:29 a.m. on Fridays at various locations around Seattle. While not specifically geared toward parents, The November Project is a group of dedicated people looking to connect while getting in a pre-dawn workout. Some participants bring their dogs and even their children. Each workout is different and are designed for all ages at any fitness level. You’ll hear shouts of, “Awesome work!” as people sprint or trudge up Kite Hill with high-5s and hugs given out freely. All shapes, sizes and ability levels are welcome at November Project. There is a strong community aspect to the workouts which have and will always be free. The body-weight based workouts allow attendees to adjust and modify the moves for their individual needs. Running Evolution is a non-competitive running group which offers Couch to 5K classes, Boot Camps and 1/2 marathon training groups. Founder, Beth Barker has over 10 years of running coaching experience and encourages new parents to find their stride with running. She’s also been known to hand out a few encouraging butt slaps along the way and strollers are welcome in her programs. Her experience as both a mom and a runner make her sessions an excellent choice.
Sync Fitness Boot Camp classes are a compact 45 minutes of full body moves that incorporate strength training and cardio. The trainers work hard to offer modifications while also working participants to their fullest potential. The supportive and non-competitive environment of mainly women mean parents come back again and again. Classes are for adults only which means you get 45 minutes of kid-free time with over 20 of class times to choose from.
Head to Seward Park or Volunteer Park for the Southside Booty Camp! Each Booty Camp is a four-week session from Monday through Thursday mornings at 6 a.m., 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. While not specifically geared toward parents, Booty Camp is structured for women. The camp does move indoors during the rainy season to the Mount Baker Community Club. Grab your yoga mat, some weights along with a good pair of shoes for a fantastic workout, full of support.
Mommy's Fit Zone in Issaquah provides Moms with an effective workout and is designed to include your little one. The interval training system combines strength, cardio and abs for a workout which boosts metabolisms, burns fat and strengthens muscles with multi-joint and multi-muscle movements for a challenging yet fun workout. Owner, Therapy Khy is an ACE (American Council on Exercise) Certified Group Fitness Instructor and Therapeutic Exercise Specialist and holds Mommy’s Fit Zone at the Issaquah Community Center. Monthly passes are available along with $12 drop in classes and packages. Class schedules can be viewed on the Mommy’s Fit Zone website. The first class is free so go check them out!
Joining the YMCA provides more than just family-friendly fitness, there are also swim lessons, group exercise classes and more importantly child care. Visit www.seattleymca.org to find a convenient location throughout Seattle and the Eastside.
Take it outside! MOMentum co-founders, Kelly Singer and Paige Dunn partner with local foundations and Parks Departments to provide low impact and self-propelled workout equipment specifically made for women and then install it next to playgrounds in local underserved parks such as Marymoor Park in Redmond, Les Gove Park in Auburn and Bitter Lake Reservoir Park in North Seattle. Businesses such as KomPan, a fitness and playground equipment producer, donate the equipment to MOMentum so moms can get their workout in while their kids play at the park. The low impact equipment is easy to use and helps focus on areas important to moms such as abs, arms, hips and thighs. They are always installed within close viewing distance of playground equipment.
