New food and culture website Ethnic Seattle fills a niche
Ethnic Seattle, the latest project from Seattle nonprofit The Ethnic Business Coalition, is a website dedicated to amplifying the voices of immigrant- and minority-owned businesses. It's both a totally cool guide for food and drink news around town and a meaningful resource for understanding the history of Seattle's minority communities, whose food is often celebrated but whose creators are often given minimal attention.
The website, newly launched this year, features what at first appear to be standard Yelp-style food and culture categories: Food & Drink, Lifestyle, Community. However, Ethnic Seattle is doing more than just cataloging the best ethnic food in town – they’re working to create meaningful understanding of the cultural values and historical influence of a number of Seattle’s minority communities.
The site's very cool “Insider’s Guide” gives readers a history of Seattle’s historically nonwhite neighborhoods. The Insider's Guide offers cultural and historical information on the International District, Japantown, Little Saigon, the Central District, Rainier Valley, and Beacon Hill, giving readers a slightly richer understanding of the neighborhoods they may frequent for their awesome cuisine but may not know much about.
