Summer programs feed hungry kids

It’s summer! No more classes, no more books … and for some kids, no more breakfast or lunch.  Several area programs step in to fill the need when hungry kids no longer have access to the free or reduced-price meals they got while school was in session.

If you or someone you know could use some help feeding the kids this summer, here are some resources to help.

Seattle participates in the federal Summer Food Service Program that provides free breakfasts, lunches and snacks for kids ages 1 to 18. It starts Monday, June 22, and runs through Aug. 21. Families can find details on the program here, and they can search online for the closest meal site (that includes sites all over the state, not just in Seattle).

Some area YMCAs have partnered with the Walmart Foundation for a summer lunch program. Check the full list to find the closest participating meal site.
