Podcasts for Parents: Space Adventures and Social Activism

This week: Wisdom from social activist icon Ruby Sales and mysterious adventures in space

This week I introduce you to two wonderful podcasts. For kids, there's a fun science-fiction series in space. And for grown-ups, a moving rumination on love, community and much more featuring social activist Ruby Sales.

FOR KIDS (6+)

The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian: The Room Behind the Room (Behind the Room) (20 mins)

The producers describe the show this way: a "mystery gang" story, sort of like Scooby-Doo meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer — in space! The story centers on Finn Caspian, an eight-year-old boy aboard The Famous Marlowe 280 Interplanetary Exploratory Space Station. I find these serialized adventure podcasts to be so much fun! Great for a nightly routine or long trips in the car.

FOR PARENTS

On Being: Ruby Sales — Where Does It Hurt? (51 mins)

In this episode of On Being, a conversation takes place that speaks to our country's specific situation while also completely transcending it. Listening to this felt like rays of wisdom shining upon my face, and by the end I felt it had the effect of re-centering my perspective.
