There are coloring books for kids and coloring books for adults. Now there’s a pop culture coloring book for both from Seattle’s Two Thangs.
Matthew Brennan IV created Pop Art Pizza Party: An Adult Coloring and Drawing Book (OK for kids, too) from alternative versions of his commissioned artwork. Brennan’s art venture, Two Thangs, invites people to choose two unrelated pop culture icons or ideas and then combines them into one image — with hilarious results. He repurposed some of the sketches that didn’t become paintings into a story about “the best party to ever happen,” featuring Lady Gaga, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Sasquatch, Chewbacca, Godzilla, RuPaul, My Little Pony, Indiana Jones, Elmo and Daft Punk.
Brennan received his BFA in 2001 in Pennsylvania and moved to Seattle a little more than 10 years ago. He opened his studio at Inscape about six years ago and became a full-time artist just over a year ago after previously working as a paralegal. While conceptualized as paintings with an adult focus, older kids and teens will love Pop Art Pizza Party. It’s also interactive: “It’s as much of a drawing book as a coloring book.” says Brennan. Each one is hand-assembled,signed by the artist and features 25 individual drawings.
Find Two Thangs’ art at the Punk Rock Flea Market on May 7, the Georgetown Carnival on June 11 or the Two Thangs one year anniversary party at the Inscape open studios event on June 5.
