'Reading Party in the Park,' a great KCLS event for Seattle-area families

King County Library System has combined two of our favorite things, reading and parks, to create a bunch of events it's calling "Reading Party in the Park."

What could be better?

Here's what the library says: "Bring a blanket or lawn chair and your favorite summer read and join fellow readers for an afternoon in the park! Library staff will be on hand to answer questions about summer reading and make book recommendations. Local DJs and musicians will provide a relaxing soundtrack."

Most events are during afternoon hours. There are too many to list here, but check the KCLS website and event schedule. Chances are there's one close to you. Some advertise additional features such as ... wait for it ... food!

My quick search shows the first party is Sunday, July 14, at Seahurst Park in Burien, and the latest one I saw was Sunday, Aug. 18, on the lawn outside the Bellevue library. Many of the parties are on weekdays, though.

At the one Thursday, Aug. 15, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Redmond branch, there also will be a Friends of the Library book sale, with prices starting at 25 cents.

The KCLS Foundation is helping to put on these events, which are open to all ages.
