Seattle Public Schools and Five Others Win Nutrition and Physical Education Grants

The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded 76 grants through the Carol M. White Physical Education Program, intended to help initiate, expand or enhance physical education and nutrition education programs, including after-school programs, for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Grant recipients must implement programs that help students make progress toward meeting their state standards for physical education. In addition, these programs must undertake instruction in healthy eating habits and good nutrition, physical fitness activities, and opportunities for professional development for teachers of physical education to stay abreast of the latest research, issues and trends in the field.

In Washington, the grant recipients are as follows:

  • Seattle Public Schools: $650,698
  • Sachem Central School District: $540,015
  • Sumner School District: $496,754
  • Tumwater School District: $424,338
  • Toutle River Ranch: $327,534
  • Wahluke School District: $326,268
