Strengthening Families Washington 2017 Unsung Hero Dean Yohe

2017 Unsung Hero Dean Yohe

Seattle's Child is proud to once again sponsor the Unsung Heroes being honored in February by the Department of Early Learning’s Strengthening Families Washington. Every day this month we'll present an Unsung Hero on seattleschild.com. Nominations are accepted from around the state and include biological parents, grandparents, foster and adoptive parents. Some volunteer at local schools; some have started nonprofit organizations; some mentor others in their communities. All honorees are true heroes - outstanding caregivers doing important work on behalf of children.

February 6, 2017

Honoree:  Dean Yohe, Deer Park

Nominator:  Jacque Elsom

Dean married my daughter, Nikki, a single mom, in the spring of 2000. Dean was a principal at the time and had been honored as Washington State Principal of the Year in 1999. He has been in education for 32 years and is currently teaching special education at Ferris High School where he is also a wrestling coach, an intervention specialist and a teacher in an after school program called “Ican.”

In addition to his demanding workload, Dean and Nikki have been involved with foster care since 2006 and have cared for approximately 35 foster children. In 2010 they adopted two children and are currently waiting to adopt two more. They have eight children living in their home at this time including an 11-year-old granddaughter.

Dean and Nikki make sure they keep their priorities straight by attending church regularly and contributing to charities. When asked how they are able to continue doing foster care they both respond that they feel that it is God’s calling on their lives and if they can help one child feel the love of Christ and the hope of being a part of a stable caring family then they are fulfilling their purpose.

In March of last year Dean’s 34-year-old daughter, Sarah, was tragically taken from us. Her selfless desire to help others was honored when she donated her organs and saved the lives of numerous others.
