Strengthening Families Washington 2017 Unsung Hero Kerry Boone

Unsung Hero Kerry Boone

Seattle's Child is proud to once again sponsor the Unsung Heroes being honored in February by the Department of Early Learning’s Strengthening Families Washington. Every day this month we'll present an Unsung Hero on seattleschild.com. Nominations are accepted from around the state and include biological parents, grandparents, foster and adoptive parents. Some volunteer at local schools; some have started nonprofit organizations; some mentor others in their communities. All honorees are true heroes - outstanding caregivers doing important work on behalf of children.

February 17, 2017

Honoree:  Kerry Boone, Monroe

Nominator:  Joe Neigel

Kerry Boone is a mother of five children – one with special needs – who is dedicated to strengthening her family and our community through an amazing spirit of service.

Without fanfare or recognition, Mrs. Boone volunteers her time coordinating justserve.org, a website developed by her church that matches volunteers with local volunteer opportunities. She is also the co-chair of our Monroe Community Coalition, a collaboration working to increase protective factors and decrease risk factors that influence youth substance abuse, delinquency, violence, school dropout, teen pregnancy and the development of mental health disorders. In addition, she is a vital and vocal member of our school district’s parent advisory committee where she is a strong advocate for children’s wellness.

To some, Mrs. Boone may appear to be the proverbial “busybody” or “squeaky wheel,” but for those of us who serve alongside her, she is a dedicated mom driven to make the world a better place for her children, and all of ours. In that, she is fearless.

From my perspective, Mrs. Boone exemplifies the words of Mother Teresa of Calcutta better than anyone I have ever known, “Love cannot remain by itself — it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action and that action is service."
