Strengthening Families Washington 2017 Unsung Hero Lisa Bodner
Unsung Hero Lisa Bodner
Seattle's Child is proud to once again sponsor the Unsung Heroes being honored in February by the Department of Early Learning’s Strengthening Families Washington. Every day this month we'll present an Unsung Hero on seattleschild.com. Nominations are accepted from around the state and include biological parents, grandparents, foster and adoptive parents. Some volunteer at local schools; some have started nonprofit organizations; some mentor others in their communities. All honorees are true heroes - outstanding caregivers doing important work on behalf of children.
February 25, 2017
Honoree: Lisa Bodner, Vancouver
Nominator: Sandra Homan
I first met Lisa when she came to my preschool classroom to talk about her 3-year-old son who would soon be enrolling in our Deaf and Hard of Hearing program. She and her husband had adopted Sam from Guatemala as an infant knowing he had a congenital cataract in his right eye but soon found out that he was profoundly deaf and later that he was autistic as well. Sam received cochlear implants at an early age and Lisa and Jack committed themselves to doing whatever it would take to further his educational and social development goals.
Lisa has been tireless in her advocacy for Sam as he’s moved through the education system, while remaining focused and calm in outlining his needs as his team has changed through the years. She has helped other families along the way as well.
Lisa has seen to it that Sam has a rich social life through their friends and church. She also makes sure that he is a participant in church responsibilities and that he takes on job responsibilities as he is able. Sam has worked in school-based employment situations as well as doing yard work for his families and others during the summer.
Sam will continue to face challenges as he makes his way through life, but Lisa is there to provide the support he needs to be successful. Lisa is truly an unsung hero and I hope you consider her for this award.
