Strengthening Families Washington 2017 Unsung Hero Maria Rodriguez
2017 Unsung Hero Maria Rodriguez
Seattle's Child is proud to once again sponsor the Unsung Heroes being honored in February by the Department of Early Learning’s Strengthening Families Washington. Every day this month we'll present an Unsung Hero on seattleschild.com. Nominations are accepted from around the state and include biological parents, grandparents, foster and adoptive parents. Some volunteer at local schools; some have started nonprofit organizations; some mentor others in their communities. All honorees are true heroes - outstanding caregivers doing important work on behalf of children.
February 10, 2017
Honoree: Maria Rodriguez, Walla Walla
Nominator: Miko Erikson
Maria has four children and one grandchild; she is also a primary caregiver at the child care center where she has worked the last eighteen years. Maria exhibits extreme parental resilience even when stress comes crashing down and she finds herself in devastating situations. She is strong and continues to ride the waves out until the storm passes, giving strength, love and security to her family and all of the children in her care during the crisis.
Maria has a strong local support system which she turns to in order to help her as she pours herself out to others. Maria understands the developmental needs of children and interacts with each child and their families individually, finding and embracing their unique qualities.
Maria is extremely empathetic and feels the feelings of her own children and those in her care as well as their parents as she helps to navigate negative emotions into a positive light. Maria is knowledgeable of resources that are available and can be used to help in times of need. She guides others to these resources and will even use them herself for her family when she cannot reach the outcome she knows is obtainable on her own.
Maria has been a hidden gem in our community and I believe many other families would agree with me as I wholeheartedly nominate her for the Unsung Hero Award as I can think of no one who would better deserve this honor.
