Strengthening Families Washington 2017 Unsung Hero Minerva Delgado

2017 Unsung Hero Minerva Delgado

Seattle's Child is proud to once again sponsor the Unsung Heroes being honored in February by the Department of Early Learning’s Strengthening Families Washington. Every day this month we'll present an Unsung Hero on seattleschild.com. Nominations are accepted from around the state and include biological parents, grandparents, foster and adoptive parents. Some volunteer at local schools; some have started nonprofit organizations; some mentor others in their communities. All honorees are true heroes - outstanding caregivers doing important work on behalf of children.

February 14, 2017

Honoree:  Minerva Delgado, Yakima

Nominator:  Minerva Pardo

For the past three years, Minerva has participated in Family Engagement activities with the West Valley School District (Yakima, WA) to support her children’s education. She has been a reliable participant in ESL classes which are held three times a week after school. She also participates in monthly Parent Education Classes as well as monthly Parent Nights.

Ms. Delgado supports her children to be bilingual, emphasizing the value of literacy in both Spanish and English. She has participated with her two school-age children, who are in second grade and fourth grade, in Spanish reading groups for parents and their children to model literacy and a love of reading.

Last spring, Ms. Delgado attended the district’s Symposium for Migrant Education to learn about the Strengthening Families framework. She has been active in Family Engagement activities with the goal of increasing her knowledge of parenting and child development to support her children’s education.

Recently, for our Family Night in December, parents and their children organized a Holiday Celebration. Her children were so proud of their role in the program that they invited their teachers and the school principal to the evening event.

Minerva models a positive attitude toward life-long learning. She is a great role model for her children and for parents who participate in our Family Engagement activities. Minerva Delgado is truly an unsung hero!
