Unsung Hero: Hortencia Ramirez de Gomez

February is Parent Recognition Month. Strengthening Families Washington, of the Department of Early Learning for Washington State, believes there is no better way to recognize a parent, grandparent, foster or adoptive parent than by acknowledging the numerous and impressive things they do to strengthen their family and those around them in their community.

Seattle’s Child is proud to sponsor the Washington Unsung Hero Awards, recognizing our everyday heroes and honoring the important role caregivers play in children’s lives. There are 28 nominees for the 28 days of February, and Seattle’s Child will highlight each and every one.

Congratulations to the Unsung Hero for February 26

Hortencia Ramirez de Gomez - Lacey

This grandma is just special. She is a 59 year-old single grandma that is raising 3 grandkids. She speaks Spanish, but learned English and passed her caregiver certification in order to work and provide for her grandkids. She moved to this state and had a hard time without a job, but she is a resilient, independent and very resourceful.

She looks, asks and finds resources to help her grandkids to thrive, and is very involved with their appointments at school or doctors. She is currently working, the kids are thriving and have their basic needs met, but even more, this grandma loves to cook and care for them.

She is a hero for providing love and a safe environment for her grandkids and other people in the community.

Nominator:  Rosa Venancio
