Unsung Hero: Stefanie Preugschat

February is Parent Recognition Month. Strengthening Families Washington, of the Department of Early Learning for Washington State, believes there is no better way to recognize a parent, grandparent, foster or adoptive parent than by acknowledging the numerous and impressive things they do to strengthen their family and those around them in their community.

Seattle’s Child is proud to sponsor the Washington Unsung Hero Awards, recognizing our everyday heroes and honoring the important role caregivers play in children’s lives. There are 28 nominees for the 28 days of February, and Seattle’s Child will highlight each and every one.

Congratulations to the Unsung Hero for February 19

Stefanie Preugschat - Spokane

I am nominating Stefanie because she has been through a whirlwind over the last two years and somehow continues forward with loving and caring for her twenty‐three‐month‐old son (Theo) whom has autism. Stefanie embodies an Unsung Hero as she also has an eleven‐year‐old son (Blake) whom she spills time and energy into every day.

Theo has not had a regular night of sleep since he was born nearly two years ago. His lack of communication can also make it very difficult to understand what he wants or needs. Through never ending sleep deprivation, Stefanie has continued to love and care for Theo in all his needs with everything she has. Much of the day for her is spent trying to care for and help Theo while still raising and taking care of Blake. In the limited free time she has after running Theo to various therapies and appointments, helping get Blake to school, soccer and basketball practices and other extracurricular activities, cooking for her boys and husband and caring for her extended family members, she researches the latest information available for children with special needs.

The journey over the last two years has been even more difficult as she has seen many friends abandon her in her greatest time of need. Through many ups and downs, I am still amazed every day when I see the never‐ending love that she has for her boys and their love and relationship with her.

Nominator:  Nicholas Crooks
