Unsung Hero: Trista Mason

February is Parent Recognition Month. Strengthening Families Washington, of the Department of Early Learning for Washington State, believes there is no better way to recognize a parent, grandparent, foster or adoptive parent than by acknowledging the numerous and impressive things they do to strengthen their family and those around them in their community.

Seattle’s Child is proud to sponsor the Washington Unsung Hero Awards, recognizing our everyday heroes and honoring the important role caregivers play in children’s lives. There are 28 nominees for the 28 days of February, and Seattle’s Child will highlight each and every one.

Congratulations to the Unsung Hero for February 10

Trista Mason - Olympia

Trista is dedicated to loving and parenting her biological child Caleb with strong boundaries and the flexibility for him to be expressive and communicative. She parents her foster children with the same strength and empathy but meets each child where they are at emotionally and can’t help but nurture and encourage these children to grow emotionally, mentally and physically. One of her foster children gained much needed weight during her first few months with the Mason family and is no doubt because of predictability and care she offers.

Trista regularly attends local parenting classes and is very aware of developmental milestones in young children and sees many “issues” as developmentally appropriate. When concerns rise beyond these developmentally appropriate phases, Trista reaches out to other families, doctors, local parenting experts and more and does her best to implement the suggestions she receives. Trista is a very active member in several closely knit groups in the community including a long standing group of moms through which I personally know her. We enjoy each other’s company and offer support and advice when asked and needed. To say Trista is a model parent is an understatement. She is a go-to for ideas, support, love and resources and she herself taps into those same opportunities for her family. Trista makes the world a better place for her children and is most definitely an unsung hero.

Nominator:  Tiffany West
