Winter break camps and activities for kids around Seattle


A chilly and potentially rainy week at home in the middle of the winter, with nothing to do, is many a parent's worst nightmare. Winter break is right around the corner and the kids will be home for two weeks before you know it. Don't let the madness of cabin fever happen to you this year. Keep everyone happy (and sane) by enrolling the kids in one of these entertaining and educational day camps.

Pacific Science Center

Give your curious little minds a chance to explore and experiment with hands-on projects at this popular day camp. Topics range from messy science and art projects, to magical science experiments, space travel, candyology, board game creation and even lessons for budding young entrepreneurs.

SANCA Circus Camp

The School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts has camps that will teach your kids the finer points of tumbling, aerial arts, juggling, clowning, tightwire, the trapeze and more.

When: Dec. 26-28 and Jan. 2-4 (two sessions)

Watts Basketball Camp

This ultra-popular holiday hoop camp is run by Seattle SuperSonics legend Slick Watts. Kids will have the chance to work on the fundamentals of the game and learn teamwork at the same time. Campers will also get to build on their strengths while correcting their flaws — all with expert guidance.

When: December 26-28 and January 2-4 (two sessions)

Seattle Children's Theatre

​This full-day drama school will teach school-aged kids the ins and outs of stage makeup, improv, auditioning, Shakespeare, stage combat and more. This year, there is also the option of a Velveteen Rabbit-centered class for grades 1-2.

When: December 26-28 and January 2-4 (two sessions)

Seattle Gymnastics Academy

Kids will love a chance to get the wiggles out at the Seattle Gymnastics Academy—from the foam pit to the trampolines, there is no shortage of ways to have fun here. In addition to group games and activities during camp, there will also be crafts. Half- and full-day camp options.

When: December 26-28 and January 2-4

Woodland Park Zoo

Winter or summer, camp at the zoo is an all-time favorite. During winter break this year, kids will have a chance to learn the tricks and tools scientists use to find and study animals in the wild, as well as study baby animals growing up in the wild. Half-day camp available for kids ages 4-6.

When: December 26-28 and December 31-January 4 (two sessions)

Arena Sports

Burn off all that extra holiday energy by keeping them active all day long at one of the Arena Sports camps. Half-day camp available for ages 3-5.

When: December 20-21, 26-28 and 31 (Issaquah)

December 19-21, 26-28, 31, and January 2-4 (Mill Creek)

Kids Science Labs

They'll still be learning even though they're not in school at this camp for science enthusiasts. Innovative projects and fun hands-on experiments will also show them how fun learning can be. Count on hands-on science classes in the morning, and hands-on science activities in the afternoon, with plenty of good times in between.

When: December 26-28 and December 31, January 2-4 (two sessions)

Thrive Art School

If you have a budding artist or two on your hands, consider this art camp. The theme this winter is "Mingle That" — mixing up materials like watercolors and pastels, adding different materials together to create something new, and more, like clay, collages and drawing.

Museo Art Academy

Let them get their hands a little dirty and express their creative side at this art academy for littles. Choose from pottery camp, cartoons and comics, or drawing and painting.

Samena Swim and Recreation Club

This Eastside camp involves fun winter activities, games and of course, swimming. Bring a lunch, drink, swimsuit, towel, jacket and be ready for some serious fun.

Stroum Jewish Community Center

There is a little bit of everything at this Mercer Island day camp: active games, creative art projects, singing and swimming, not to mention special guests and a field trip!
