Seattle Public Schools Propose New Budget at $556M
Seattle Times
A public hearing will be held Wednesday, July 2 at 6pm at the John Stanford Center, to discuss a budget proposal that Steve Sundquist, chairman of the School Board’s finance committee calls “unsustainable but responsible.” The Seattle Times reports that despite rising costs and decreased enrollment, the budget proposal includes increasing staff by 102 jobs next school year and giving teachers a pay raise of about 3 percent. This coming year is the last year of a five-year-contract with certified staff that included raising the pay of teachers to bring their pay level into the top 5 of 12 surrounding districts. The contract also required the district to add a number of teaching assistants for special education and bilingual students.
