Seattle Parks and Recreation's The Able Teens (TAT) program will hold a book fair and wrap gifts at the Westwood Village Barnes & Noble (2600 S.W. Barton St., Suite E-1) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 29.
Do some holiday shopping, listen to stories read by one of our teens, make a fun craft project in the kids' department, and get your gifts wrapped. Vouchers that authorize the donation of a percentage of purchases to the TAT program are available at any Seattle Parks community center. For a list of centers, please see www.seattle.gov/parks/centers.asp.
Purchases can be made at any Barnes & Noble from Nov. 27 through Dec. 3. A voucher must be presented at the time of purchase.
The Able Teens (TAT) program is an afterschool vocational training program for teens ages 14 to 19 who have developmental disabilities. Currently in its 6th year, the program – a partnership between Seattle Parks and Recreation and The Associated Recreation Council (ARC) – has seven teens who work with job coaches to learn and perform various jobs and job-related skills.
TAT members have worked at various community centers, library branches, and a food bank, learning and doing skills such as food prep, cooking, cleaning, event set-up, organizing and serving. They also learn skills such as how to search for a job, fill out an application/resume and how to interview. The program's goal is to give these teens the skills that they need to get long-term, paying jobs and a sense of independence.
