All Aboard for a Book Reading with Matthew Porter

by Barb Kittell

Woo woo! If you love all things local and literary – and your little one loves trains and/or monkeys – you’ll want to head down to Secret Garden Books at 2214 N.W. Market St. in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood on Sat., Jan. 11. At 2 p.m., local author and illustrator Matthew Porter will be reading from his latest children’s book, Monkey World: The Thunderbolt Express. Plus, we hear there will be art activities to entertain and engage the whole family.

Not only is The Thunderbolt Express Matthew Porter’s newest book, but it’s also his first picture book for older kids (recommended for ages 4 to 8), and the first in a series of forthcoming Monkey World books. It’s an imaginative story that follows Jango Jenkins and his monkey companions on an especially eventful train ride. You can read a book review here

Seattle’s Child was lucky to sit down and talk with Matthew Porter just a few months ago; you can read the interview here. While the book is geared toward preschoolers and early elementary school ages, kids of any age who dream of being artists or authors (or both!) will appreciate the chance to meet and chat with someone who’s made that dream a reality.
