Get Your Family Moving!
There are many fitness events well-suited to families coming up in June. Involving your kids in setting and achieving a fitness goal can be a very rewarding experience. It is a chance to bond and be a positive role model for your child, helping you establish healthy habits that will hopefully last beyond the day's workout.
The mantra for working out with your kids shouldn't be "no pain, no gain." There are plenty of local runs that offer a terrific opportunity to have some fun, too. Many events have kids' dashes or family walks. Pick one that works for you, and get your family moving!
- Wednesday, June 13: Walk, run or skip up 12 hills at Forest Park in Everett. See how far you can go in a 30-minute timed event. Register for one hill climb or for the whole series. You may register as an individual or with a team of three members. Prizes awarded at each event and at the conclusion of the series in September. Recommended for ages 6 and older (with parent/guardian). June 13, July 18, Aug. 15 and Sept. 12. Your $5 per event suggested donation benefits the Parks scholarship fund.
- Thursday, June 14: Get Movin’ is an all-ages, free, summer program aimed at motivating families to get movin’ and improve their health with an active, healthy lifestyle. 4 to 8 p.m. at Si View Park in North Bend.
- Saturday, June 16: This series of events has participants running around the beautiful Magnuson Park. Little ones can do the 200 or 400 meter kid’s run, or do the 5K with you. There are similar events each month throughout December.
- Saturday, June 16: In a race that benefits children and families who have been affected by HIV/AIDS, kids can opt for the short fun run just prior to the start of the 5K or the main race.
- Saturday, June 16: The kids triathlon includes a 25-yard swim, 0.64-mile bike and a 240-yard run at Woodinville's Cottage Lake. Or, opt for the "friends and family wave" of the regular triathlon that day.
- Sunday, June 17: An annual community event at Seward Park that is open to all. Choose the fun 4K run, a 10K run or 4K walk. All abilities are welcome, and proceeds benefit the It Gets Better Project to support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.
- Sunday, June 24: On either foot or bike, scramblers can choose 90 minutes or three hours to find as many checkpoints as possible on a map. Points are scored by answering a simple question to prove you were there. These races are fun for families, runners, cyclists and anyone who likes to explore (check out the Seattle's Child review).
- Saturday, June 30: The newest and craziest race to hit the nation. Imagine a mud run combined with foam, giant inflatable obstacles, army crawls, slip n' slides and more foam.
