Celebrate Independent Bookstore Day

Show your love for independent books on Independent Bookstore Day.

It's one thing to celebrate the idea of independent bookstores; it's another to show up at the party. This Saturday, April 30, brings the chance to support 17 Seattle area retailers on Independent Bookstore Day, a national initiative in its second year that, not surprisingly, promises plenty of lively offerings in our hyper-literate city, many aimed at families.

The truly dedicated can undertake the Indie Bookstore Challenge, which entails visiting each of the 17 participating stores in one day and thus earning 25% off at all of them for the rest of the year. Or just wander down to your local shop and see what festivities are going on. As author Ann Patchett said, "If what a bookstore offers matters to you, then shop at a bookstore." For a full list of participating stores and more information, visit http://www.indiebookstoreday.com/ or the Seattle Facebook page.

Among the many child-friendly options:

Greenlake's Mockingbird Books is hosting children’s band The Nom Noms and a scavenger hunt.

Island Books on Mercer Island is hosting authors Clare Meeker and Jennifer Longo Seattle Children’s Theatre is staging story time at Secret Garden Books in Ballard (alongside cake from Larson’s Bakery).

Both Third Place Books locations will offer free coffee and treats  along with prize wheels and trivia contests.

Capitol Hill's Elliott Bay Books Co. is staging a dog costume contest and photo booth.
