Congratulations unsung hero: Catriona Colerick

February is Parent Recognition Month. Strengthening Families Washington, of the Department of Early Learning for Washington State, believes there is no better way to recognize a parent, grandparent, foster or adoptive parent than by acknowledging the numerous and impressive things they do to strengthen their family and those around them in their community.

Seattle’s Child is proud to sponsor the Washington Unsung Hero Awards, recognizing our everyday heroes and honoring the important role caregivers play in children’s lives. There are 28 nominees for the 28 days of February, and Seattle’s Child will highlight each and every one.

Congratulations to the Unsung Hero for February 22

Catriona Colerick – Centralia

Catriona is a single mother of two young children. She has struggled with various issues, yet she manages to assess each situation and find ways to meet her family’s needs. Catriona’s daughter is an amazing, precocious little girl. Catriona has lead by example for her kids and it is paying off beautifully. Her son, Connor, faces everyday challenges due to his EOE diagnosis. His body reacts to almost all foods as if he is allergic to them. Catriona has tackled this head on and has taught her son to be a self-advocate at the age of 5!

Catriona is the co-founder of a support group for others living with or caring for similar diagnoses. She was a contributing factor to recently passed legislation that requires health insurance companies to pay for a special formula regardless of how it is ingested. This required her to testify before our state legislature about her son’s journey. Throughout this process Catriona educated her children about what they were doing, why they were doing it, and what they hoped to accomplish.

Catriona decided to home-school her children out of necessity. When her daughter reached school age it was difficult to arrange for child care around the multitude of medical appointments and conflicting school schedule; this has proven to be a blessing. Catriona joined a home schooling group and she did so well that they asked her to teach! She has blossomed in this role and now has a source of income to help support her family.

Nominator: Dawn Harrison
