Congratulations unsung hero: Emily Pico

February is Parent Recognition Month. Strengthening Families Washington, of the Department of Early Learning for Washington State, believes there is no better way to recognize a parent, grandparent, foster or adoptive parent than by acknowledging the numerous and impressive things they do to strengthen their family and those around them in their community.

Seattle’s Child is proud to sponsor the Washington Unsung Hero Awards, recognizing our everyday heroes and honoring the important role caregivers play in children’s lives. There are 28 nominees for the 28 days of February, and Seattle’s Child will highlight each and every one.

Congratulations to the Unsung Hero for February 23

Emily Pico – Tacoma

Emily is a loving and one-of-a-kind foster parent, caring for a precious, medically fragile 4-year-old girl. This beautiful little girl, whom Emily is in the process of adopting, has a past history of extreme prematurity and suffers from severe asthma/chronic lung disease and epilepsy. When Emily's little girl contracts common viral illnesses, she can quickly develop respiratory distress that needs quick medical treatment (oxygen, steroids, nebulizer treatments) and oftentimes requires hospitalization. Due to Emily's keen eye, quick responses and communication with her pediatrician, her little girl receives the best care possible to stabilize her respiratory distress. Emily has never wavered in her unconditional love, care and support of her bright-eyed little girl. Enduring many sleepless nights, complex medical treatments at home and multiple trips to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital & Health Center, Emily still manages to shine bright with her positivity, big smile and countless generosity by sending letters/cards or baking cookies for staff to show her appreciation. When I asked our nursing staff who they would nominate, hands down they all said Emily!

Nominator: Rhonda Fry
