Congratulations unsung hero: Achamma (Sandy) John

Seattle’s Child recognizes the wonderful, everyday heroes nominated for the Washington Unsung Hero Awards this month.

February is Parent Recognition Month. Strengthening Families Washington, of the Department of Early Learning for Washington State, believes there is no better way to recognize a parent, grandparent, foster or adoptive parent than by acknowledging the numerous and impressive things they do to strengthen their family and those around them in their community.

Seattle’s Child is proud to sponsor the Washington Unsung Hero Awards, recognizing our everyday heroes and honoring the important role caregivers play in children’s lives. There are 28 nominees for the 28 days of February, and Seattle’s Child will highlight each and every one.

Congratulations to the Unsung Hero for February 9

Achamma (Sandy) John Bellingham

Sandy has been an engaged parent from the time that her two children were enrolled in the Opportunity Council. She volunteered to be an alternate on the policy council and made it to each and every meeting. She was then elected for three terms and is now our "past-chairperson" and remains on hand to help with the new chairperson transition. Sandy is a strong advocate for families in Whatcom County and has taken part in Advocacy Day for two years in a row. During one event, she volunteered to interpret for Gov. Inslee.

One of her strengths is her ability to make social connections that support those in need around her. She is always on the lookout for families to help and is an advocate for parent engagement and children’s services. She seeks help not only for her family, but others as well. She is also a person who others look to for emotional support. She is someone who can be counted on when someone suffers a loss and has wise words for one in a challenging circumstance.
