Let’s talk about holiday toy drives.
It’s been tough this year, and so many Seattle-area families are in need of so many things. Toys and gifts for kids is one area that can really tug at the heartstrings, but lots of good people are working hard to make sure that — with help from all of us — kids will get gifts.
In most cases, this is not when you go through your closet and get rid of hand-me-downs (although plenty of places will accept gently used items, too).
If you’ve got some money to spare, this is a nice way to spend it.
It can also be a fun holiday activity, and great lesson, for kids.
We know one family who would make sort of a game out of it: Each person would be given a budget, and they’d spread out in a popular, large toy retailer and go to town, seeing who could come up with the “best” gift for the money (subjective, of course).
Here are some of the holiday toy drives we’ve heard about. If you know of more, please reach out!

South King Fire & Rescue
South King Fire & Rescue, serving Des Moines, Federal Way and parts of unincorporated South King County from dozens of facilities, is partnering with the organization Federal Way Cares for Kids to accept donations of new, unwrapped toys and $20 gift cards. Financial gifts also welcome. The firefighters also are taking their show on the road with a series of visits to neighborhoods (sirens and lights blazing) Dec. 4-7, during which they will greet families and accept donations.
