Being able to live near your child’s school and walk there is a wonderful option only if the route from home to school is a safe one. The issue of pedestrian safety becomes even more pressing if you live in a neighborhood where car accidents interfering with pedestrian space seem frighteningly common.

Feet First, a nonprofit organization that advocates for walkable communities, has asked Washington state House and Senate candidates to weigh in on pedestrian safety issues. Candidate responses can be viewed at feetfirst.org/questionnaire. Check to see how candidates in your district feel about Safe Routes to School funding and other pedestrian infrastructure issues before casting your vote!
