A popular Puget Sound-area holiday tradition is back: Zoolights 2020.
The outdoor, walk-through light display will open Nov. 27 at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma with some changes we’re growing accustomed to in the COVID era: smaller crowds, timed admission tickets, masks required on everyone 5 and older — and hand sanitizer everywhere.
Point Defiance becomes a colorful winter wonderland with more than 700,000 LED lights reprsenting Northwest landmarks, zoo creatures and whimsical animal scenes like sledding penguins.
Indoor attractions — the aquariums, the carousel and the main Plaza Cafe — will be closed during Zoolights, but outdoor food and gift kiosks will be open. (Hot cocoa break, anyone?) Dress for the weather and prepare to stretch those legs and see the sights! Crowd sizes will be limited, but it’s up to each family to help keep the proper social distance.
Tickets are on sale. Advance online purchase is required.
Zoolights 2020 will run 5 to 9 p.m. nightly Nov. 27 through Jan. 3 (closed Dec. 24-25).
More details here about safety protocols and more. Also, tips to enhance your experience such as planning a midweek visit. (The zoo also says it’s sometimes less crowded after 8 p.m., if you can wait that long!)
