Additional information

The Salish Sea School is a nonprofit marine biology education organization based in Anacortes, Washington. Our mission is to connect people—especially youth—to the wonders of the Salish Sea through meaningful outdoor experiences, hands-on science, and community stewardship.

We believe that the best way to inspire the next generation of marine scientists or ocean advocates is to get them outside and immersed in the ecosystems we’re working to protect. Our programs invite children, families, and curious adults to explore the beaches, forests, and waters of the Salish Sea while learning about the incredible wildlife that calls this region home.

The Salish Sea School offers a wide variety of experiences designed to spark curiosity and deepen connections to the natural world. Youth programs include summer camps and field experiences where students search tidepools for sea stars, study seabirds and marine mammals, learn about kelp forests, and discover how watersheds connect inland communities to the ocean. Many programs also incorporate real scientific observation and data collection, allowing students to participate in community science efforts.

Family and community events create opportunities for people of all ages to explore together. These experiences often include guided beach explorations, island visits, wildlife observation, and special learning opportunities with marine naturalists and scientists. Participants may spot harbor seals resting on rocky outcrops, seabirds diving for forage fish, or even whales traveling through the rich waters of the Salish Sea.

A core focus of The Salish Sea School is increasing access to outdoor education. Many children in our region have never had the opportunity to visit a beach or explore marine habitats. Through scholarships, partnerships with local schools, and community programs, we work to ensure that students from underserved communities can experience the coast for the first time and build a lifelong relationship with the ocean.

These experiences are about more than learning facts—they’re about building wonder, confidence, and a sense of responsibility for the ecosystems around us. When young people explore tidepools, watch seabirds soar, or feel the salty wind on the water, they begin to see themselves as part of the story of the Salish Sea.

Whether you’re a family looking for an unforgettable outdoor adventure, a student eager to explore marine science, or a community member passionate about protecting our local waters, The Salish Sea School welcomes you aboard.

Together, we’re inspiring the next generation of ocean scientists and stewards—one beach, one boat trip, and one discovery at a time.
