A story of recovery, resilience & reunification | Unsung Heroes

Meet Chelaine Guzman from Spokane

Seattle’s Child is proud to partner with the state Department of Children, Youth and Families Strengthening Families Washington to honor outstanding caregivers doing important work on behalf of children. Throughout February, we’ll introduce you to Unsung Heroes from around the state. Enjoy their stories.

Chelaine Guzman, Spokane

I am honored to nominate Chelaine Guzman for the Unsung Hero Award! Chelaine has demonstrated immense courage and resilience in her recovery and reunification with her children. I met Chelaine after she relocated from Tri Cities to Spokane to prioritize her recovery. Chelaine immediately engaged in recovery-focused programing, parenting classes, achieving her GED and most importantly healing her relationship with her children and her family.

When Chelaine entered into HJRA Recovery Residential program her CPS case was close to termination, [but] Chelaine did not let that phase her. She maintained her visitation and within a few months was able to restore her relationship with her children. Currently Chelaine is fulltime parent to her youngest child and enjoys weekend visits with her other three. Chelaine is determined to support their healing as she herself heals from many years of addiction. Chelaine is a leader within HJRA recovery community. She took on the role of House Manager and has been a consistent support for the women and children that come into the residence. She selflessly assists new residents with integrating into the household and is a go to for HJRA case managers when building out wellness pathways and community building in our community.

Upon completion of her GED Chelaine plans to study to become a corrections office. Her desire to give back to her community while building the live she so deserves serves as a shining star to all who are navigating recovery to become the best version of themselves.
