A summer camp that brings out the best in youth

Developing skills like grit, gratitude, curiosity and optimism in kids

At Open Window School, our Summer Program is thoughtfully designed to help campers grow and thrive. Summer camp provides a safe and supportive environment where children can explore new experiences and develop what renowned youth development expert Michael Brandwein calls, ‘second-level qualities’—the skills and traits that help kids shine as individuals and in their communities.

What are examples of second-level qualities? Consider a camp talent show. A camper gathers a group of friends together and signs up—that’s leadership and bravery. The group creates a dance together—that’s creativity and organization. It doesn’t work the first time, but they keep practicing, get it right, and perform—that’s teamwork and perseverance.

This development of second-level qualities is the secret sauce of summer camps. Campers learn grit, empathy, teamwork, and much more. The staff at Open Window School see themselves as being in the construction business—they build great kids!

We sat down with Chanel Sudds, who oversees their summer program, to find out more.

What drew you to Open Window School’s summer program and this type of work?

I never had the chance to attend camp as a kid, but I always dreamed of what it would be like. I wanted it to be a place where I could make best friends, and who I was didn’t matter as much as what I brought to the game of Gaga Ball. A place where I could laugh so hard my cheeks hurt, sing as loud as possible, and let my heart shine brighter than my mind.

Open Window School embodies that dream for me. During the school year, we encourage kids to show both their hearts and their minds, and I get to bring that same philosophy to the summer. It’s truly my dream job, and I feel so honored to create a space where kids can thrive.

My love for the magic of camp inspired me to take this path. I’ve worked in education for over 10 years, starting as a camp counselor and working my way up to find my true passion – directing summer programs! Summer is a time for kids to let loose, be silly, and discover themselves, and I love watching campers form lifelong friendships and feel truly valued.

What’s the philosophy behind your camp?

Our camps are built on three pillars:

  • Inclusion
  • Growth
  • Exploration

We strive to make every camper feel welcomed, valued, and heard. By balancing fun and structure, we help kids develop skills like grit, gratitude, curiosity, and optimism. Whether campers explore nature or dive into STEM projects, we encourage them to take on challenges enthusiastically and with innovation.

Tell us more about your camp options.

Adventure Camp is all about variety and movement. Campers stick with the same counselor and group throughout the week, exploring different activities like cool crafts or exciting games on the field. It’s perfect for kids who want a break from classroom structure and get a dose of fun-filled exploration.

Innovations Camp is about giving kids the freedom to pursue their passions while still bringing that camp energy. It’s a bit more personalized than Adventure Camp. Campers get to choose classes based on their interests. Maybe they’ll spend the day coding, taking ukulele lessons, or playing chess. Campers get to choose the classes based on their interests.

How do the specialist-led activities in Adventure Camp enhance the experience?

Specialist teachers in areas such as STEM or Movement really elevate our camp experience because they bring their expertise into every lesson. Our specialists are educators who truly love their subjects. Their enthusiasm inspires our campers to dive deeper into these areas while our counselors provide social-emotional support and guidance.

This combination ensures that campers learn and build confidence, tackle challenges, and celebrate their progress. It’s such a joy to see kids light up when they accomplish something they didn’t think they could do!

What does a typical day at camp look like?

Every day starts and ends with Shenanigan City, our camp-wide assembly where we sing songs, do challenges and celebrate birthdays. In between, campers dive into their activities or classes, depending on their camp. It’s a blend of structure and spontaneity that keeps the energy high and the kids engaged.

How do you support children with diverse needs?

We’re fortunate to have a dedicated Behavior and Inclusion Coach, Diana, who works closely with our staff and campers. Before camp begins, our staff undergo a week-long orientation where we focus on strategies for creating an inclusive environment.

Diana is there to offer additional support for campers who may need it. It’s all about meeting each child where they are and ensuring they feel seen and supported throughout their time with us.

Open Window School Summer Program Popsicle Fridays!

What is a tradition families can look forward to at your camp?

Popsicle Fridays! There’s nothing better than ending the week with a cold treat, smiles, and our special Popsicle Friday shirt. Little traditions like these create lasting memories and bring the community closer together.

Finally, why do you think summer camp is such an important experience for children?

Summer camp provides a supportive and welcoming environment where children can explore new experiences, build lasting friendships, and express their creativity. It’s a place where everyone feels a sense of belonging, joy and silliness are celebrated, and laughter is part of everyday life. Camp creates opportunities for growth, connection, and unforgettable memories—it’s where magic truly happens!
