Additional information

Pacific Bonsai Museum offers families a unique blend of nature, art, and interactive learning in a peaceful outdoor setting. Home to one of the finest bonsai collections in North America, the museum transforms tiny trees into big adventures for children and adults alike.

The current special exhibition Small Talk: All the dirt on growing mini-but-mighty trees brings STEM education to life through anime-inspired characters that let kids imagine “chatting” with bonsai trees about their care and growth. Interactive stations throughout the exhibition encourage hands-on exploration, including bonsai wiring demonstrations and soil sifting activities that make learning tactile and fun.

Building Wonder: Bonsai Treehouses by Dave Creek showcases six whimsical miniature treehouses created by the late lead character designer for Bob’s Burgers. These magical sculptures, integrated into dearly departed bonsai, spark imagination and wonder while honoring the creative legacy of a beloved artist. This is the first time these treehouses have been displayed for the general public outside of children’s hospitals.

With free admission for all (donations appreciated), Pacific Bonsai Museum provides screen-free family time in nature without the long drive to wilderness areas. The museum’s flat, fine-grained gravel walkways are stroller- and wheelchair-accessible, making it welcoming for families with young children.

Educational field trip programs offer both virtual and in-person options for schools and homeschoolers, featuring STEM and arts-based curricula that align with Washington Art standards and Common Core standards. Students become “Junior Bonsai Horticulturalists” with guided tours and adventure booklets designed for hands-on exploration. Pre- and post-visit lesson plans enhance the learning experience, making bonsai an engaging gateway to science, art, and nature connection.

Located just 30 minutes south of Seattle in Federal Way, Pacific Bonsai Museum proves that the most profound experiences often come in small packages. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
