The Northwest School is a private independent school (grades 6-12) located on an urban campus in the vibrant Capitol Hill neighborhood. We are the only boarding program in Seattle with 5- and 7-day boarding options.
The Northwest School has been rated #1 Best High School for the Arts in Washington (Niche, 2026) and Best Middle School (BestInThePNW, 2026).
We believe that a liberal arts education is essential for developing well-rounded and versatile individuals who are equipped to navigate the complexities of the modern world. The interdisciplinary curriculum and education experience foreground our foundational pillars of environmental sustainability, social justice, and a global perspective.
Our focus on the liberal arts provides students with an expansive and interdisciplinary education, encompassing mathematics, science, humanities, arts, and modern languages. This comprehensive approach helps students to cultivate critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and a global perspective.
Our exceptional faculty and small class sizes provide an intellectually rigorous yet highly supportive learning environment to help students grow and thrive. We offer several opportunities for students to explore and grow both in the classroom and through athletics, travel, outdoor recreation, extracurricular activities, and more.
Our Middle School program embraces the important transition from childhood to adolescence by providing a safe, inclusive environment and a challenging program. Teachers encourage students to take risks while providing support to help them develop a strong sense of identity and what they can accomplish.
The Upper School program challenges students to expand their worldview and deepen their self-understanding through an expansive study of mathematics, science, humanities, arts, and modern languages. By exploring issues, ideas and methods across these subject areas, our students acquire the knowledge, skills and confidence to embrace the expectations and evolving demands of college and beyond. Our College Counseling program works with students to help them find the right college fit and also supports and guides them through the application process.
Participation and excellence are the guiding lights for Northwest Athletics. Every student is encouraged to develop and flourish through dedication, teamwork, and accountability. We are a no-cut school, and every student who wants to participate is encouraged and supported. Our Athletics program has a rich history of league, tournament, district, and state championships. Every sport has sub-varsity teams that focus on skill development and participation.
