Several local businesses, school districts and nonprofit organizations are putting on school supply drives this summer to benefit children in need.
As you work on your child's list from school, pick up a few extra items to drop off at one of these larger drives, or one within your school district, and help local kids get a good start this year:
Bartell Drugs School Tools for Kids in Need: People can stop by any Bartell Drugs store to donate school supplies. World Vision will distribute the donations through their local storehouse, where area teachers have access to free supplies for low income schools. Visit this link for a list of most-needed items. The drive runs through Aug. 30.
Fred Meyer Back to School Supply Drive: Fred Meyer is collecting school supplies at all Northwest stores and giving them to The Salvation Army for distribution to kids who need help preparing for the new school year. Buy an extra school supply or two and simply put them in the donation box at the store.
Sleep Country USA School Supply Drive for Foster Kids: From now through Sept. 7, donations of new school supplies can be made at any Sleep Country store, to be distributed among Sleep Country's partner foster care organizations. The most needed items include backpacks, notebooks, three-ring binders, calculators and flash drives. As well, those who bring in donations to Wild Waves in Federal Way may receive half-price admission on Sunday, Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
University Village Back to School Drive: Help local kids from the Boys and Girls Club of Wallingford get ready to go back to school. Bring your donation of school supplies to the silver box located in Center Court across from Sole Food. Supplies can be donated through Aug. 25. Check here for a list of suggested items.
Great Places to Donate Funds
Perhaps you've already taken care of school supplies, or you prefer to donate online; try these organizations:
Project Cool – Seattle/King County Coalition on Homelessness: Every fall through Project Cool, Coalition members and volunteers make sure that hundreds of homeless children and youth start the school year off right. Project Cool helps homeless students who may have lost most or all of their personal possessions get the school supplies they need to feel confident and be prepared.
Stuff The Bus – Communities In Schools of Seattle: From June through August, CIS Seattle collaborates with community partners to collect basic school supplies for K-12 public school students. At the end of the summer, thousands of supplies are given directly to Seattle Public Schools to distribute to low-income students.
The Seattle Times School Supply Drive: Now in its 15th year, this drive focuses on helping families hit by the recession. All proceeds benefit clients of Hopelink, the Seattle/King County Coalition on Homelessness and the YWCA of Seattle-King County-Snohomish County. Visit this link for information on how to make a monetary donation. The drive runs through Sept. 1.
