Seattle Public Schools predicts that its schools will be enrolling 7,000 more students in the next seven years, prompting the district to refurbish and open more schools to serve their future incoming students.
A number of schools have received funding through the Washington state legislature in the past five years to refurbish their buildings or reopen altogether, but schools continue to grow in enrollment; according to state senator David Frockt, Seattle “has some of the most overcrowded schools in the state.”
To avert the possibility of overcrowding, the state legislature has set aside $25 million to Seattle Public Schools, $10 million of which will go to update schools in need of repair. The rest of the funding will go to updating and reopening two schools, Magnolia and E.C. Hughes.
