We all know how many cool resources can be found at our nearby library.
Add one more: The ability to borrow a Discover Pass, which grants access to Washington's wonderful state parks.
A new program called Check Out Washington launched March 1 in a few select locations.
The Mount Vernon city library, Pierce County libraries, Spokane and Spokane County libraries have the passes available for one-week checkouts on a first-come, first-served basis. With the pass, borrowers will also get an “activity backpack” with binoculars, field guides and other materials.
The Washington State Parks Foundation is funding the Check Out Washington program so users can access parks and recreation lands managed by Washington State Parks, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and Department of Natural Resources.
A little background: State parks charge entrance fees to help with their upkeep. Passes cost $10 a day or $30 a year. More on that here. However, there also are a handful of free-admission days each year. Here's the list for 2019.
In a related (and also very cool) program, our local libraries have a limited number of passes to lend for various attractions including Seattle Art Museum, Seattle Aquarium, Washington State History Museum and more.
