Seattle’s Child is proud to partner with the state Department of Children, Youth and Families Strengthening Families Washington to honor outstanding caregivers doing important work on behalf of children. Throughout February, we’ll introduce you to Unsung Heroes from around the state: biological parents, grandparents, foster and adoptive parents. Some volunteer at local schools; some have started nonprofits; some mentor others in their communities. Enjoy the stories of 2024’s unsung heroes.
NOTE: Seattle’s Child is running these stories unedited, as written by the people who nominated them, in keeping with the DCYF Unsung Hero process.
Jennifer McHugh, Tumwater
I am nominating Jennifer as an unsung hero for her unwavering commitment to her family and community. Jennifer has overcome many challenges in her life and has demonstrated what resiliency looks like despite those challenges. I was the foster parent to one of her eight children and while difficult in the beginning, Jennifer came to realize that I was in her corner and was/am her biggest cheerleader.
I have witnessed Jennifer single-handedly ensure that her children’s needs are met, protective factors are in place, and that she can continually provide for, not only herself and her children, but her aging mother and grandmother as well.
This has not always been easy for Jennifer; however, she relied on her faith and positivity to turn her challenges into lessons. Jennifer has been involved in her children’s school, social activities, and creating structure and routine for her children so that they can thrive and learn to count on one another despite the situation.
Jennifer is very passionate about sharing her positivity with others through her YouTube channel and her inspiring personality around others at work and throughout the community.
When faced with challenges, Jennifer utilizes her resources and natural supports to overcome them. Jennifer has shown her children what good boundaries look like and how important family values are. Jennifer is humble and kind and leads by example. I am so incredibly proud of how much growth and resiliency she has demonstrated, and I am honored to call her a friend.
