John Stanford International School Principal Wins Prestigious National Award

Kelly Aramaki, principal of John Stanford International School, was recently awarded a $25,000 check for winning the Milken Educator Award. Only 55 teachers nationwide receive the honor each year.

This award recognizes educators who have distinguished themselves by significant achievements early in their careers and demonstrate singular commitments toward students’ education in the future. State officials, district staff, students and media gathered together on Thursday, Oct. 29, to celebrate Principal Aramaki during a surprise ceremony.

Aramaki and the other recipients will gather in Santa Monica, Calif., in May for the Milken Educator Forum, to discuss education and to celebrate the awards. Aramaki, a Bellevue native who graduated from the University of Washington and Columbia University’s Teachers College, took the helm at John Stanford four years ago. The school was named a “school of distinction” in 2009 and 2010 by the state’s Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction for scoring in the top 5 percent on standardized math and reading tests.
