Erika’s stay-at-home picks for June 20 and 21

Every week, Erika Bigelow comes up with 5 activities you can enjoy at home.

Banana Bread

This banana bread is truly a forgiving recipe, therefore perfect for kids. Do not worry if they stray a little from the directions. You really can just dump everything in one bowl, mix, and bake (although following the directions works, too). Be sure to grease the pan before baking, then sit back and let those comfort food smells fill your kitchen, and ultimately your belly

Science Experiment: Leak Proof Bag

Amaze the kids with this fun science experiment. Only three ingredients are needed: a gallon Ziploc bag, a handful of sharpened pencils, and water. Just fill the Ziploc half full of water and poke the pencils straight through the bag, so the pencil tip comes out the other side. Then wait and see – does it leak?

Increase Your Circus Skills

Exercise can get tedious, but not when you bring in the circus tricks! From plastic bag balancing to toothbrush spinning, to sock poi twirling, your small fry will work out the wiggles while gaining some silly skills to impress family and friends.

Make a Protest Poster

Wondering how to talk with your kids about the Black Lives Matter movement? Make an art project of the conversation and create beautiful signs that express your family’s hopes and feelings. Consider what you believe, practice big, bold lettering, paint and color your creation, then take your signs with you to a march, display in your neighborhood, or hang proudly in your home.

Rainbow Walking Water Experiment

Paper towels, plastic cups, water, and food coloring is all you will need for this beautiful STEAM activity. Place water in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th cups, add food coloring to specific cups, then fold and drape the paper towels from cup to cup. Use the recording sheets (pdf on the website) to predict what will happen. Then sit back and be amazed!
