Pacific Science Center Receives $1.2 Million Grant

Pacific Science Center has just received a $1.2 million Science Education Partnership Award from the National Center for Research Resources at the National Institutes of Health, marking the first time the organization has been the lead awardee of a major grant from this agency.

The five-year grant will enable Pacific Science Center to expand its partnerships with local research organizations and highlight more researchers in the region through a new exhibit space as well as a number of different programs and events at the Science Center and in communities throughout Puget Sound.

Aptly named “Out of the Lab and Into the Spotlight: Bringing Current Health Research to the Public,” the award is a natural fit for Pacific Science Center’s Portal to the Public Initiative, which aims to engage people of all ages with the current research and new discoveries happening throughout the region, and foster meaningful connections between scientists and the public.

The majority of the funding will support the creation of a new exhibit and presentation space called “The Studio” that will be located within the new permanent exhibit “Professor Wellbody’s Academy of Health & Wellness,” opening in fall of 2012. The Studio will highlight healthcare careers and current health, wellness and life sciences research taking place in the region through digital media, graphics, text, objects and programs.
