Library update: No, we still can’t physically go to the library. But there are ways to get books, even as the physical facilities remain closed because of the coronavirus.
Also, if you have a stash of materials from before things shut down in March, you can begin to give them back. (Fines and due dates aren’t an issue, though, so don’t stress.)
Here’s what’s going on:
Seattle Public Library
As of Aug. 24, the library is accepting new hold requests. Patrons can reserve up to 25 books and other materials.
Existing holds also are being filled, with people being notified by email about pickup.
Books placed on hold before the shutdown can be picked up curbside at a select (and ever expanding) number of branch sites. New holds soon will be accepted. Find details on that here.
Also, 12 branches are accepting returns; hours and capacity are limited.
The following locations are available for curbside service (by appointment) from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday: Central Library, Broadview Branch, High Point Branch, Lake City Branch, Ballard Branch, Douglass-Truth Branch, Rainier Beach Branch.
The library also has restarted its Books by Mail program and, in limited capacity, Mobile Services vehicles. They will be serving some preschools, seniors-housing facilities and encampments for people experiencing homelessness.
King County Library System
KCLS recently expanded its curbside services to 41 of 49 locations. Check for details and important steps, such as scheduling an appointment.
