Put your Child’s Feet First and Join the IWALK Challenge

The month of October is International Walk to School Month, also known as “IWALK.” Every year, tens of thousands of schools around the country and world celebrate IWALK by organizing events to encourage more students and families to walk to school. There are 50 events already scheduled in Washington this month, and local organizers are hoping to get even more schools on board.

Feet First, Washington’s only pedestrian advocacy organization, makes it easy for schools and communities to participate in IWALK. Join the Feet First IWALK Challenge and bring IWALK to your school any time during the month of October. Besides the joy and exercise you get from walking to school, you will earn a chance to win $250 worth of P.E. equipment, up to 35 pairs of Brooks shoes for a classroom and more. Feet First’s website will point you in the direction of free materials and online resources to make your event a success.

Forty years ago, nearly half of all school-aged children walked to school on a regular basis. Today, that number has diminished to just 13 percent. The change is visible in our school zones, where traffic jams are the norm during arrival and departure times. It is also evident in our youngest generations who, on the whole, are notably less active than their parents and grandparents were before them. IWALK celebrations promote health, safety and community by reminding us all about the joys and benefits found through the simple act of walking to school.

Submit a short write-up about your event by Nov. 9 to be eligible for prizes. To learn more about IWALK, visit https://feetfirst.org/feet-first-iwalk-challenge-2012.
