Rare Art from Dr. Seuss on Exhibit

You may have read our coverage of the rare art of Eric Carle on exhibit at Tacoma Art Museum. Well, this month, the artistic legacy of another late, great author gets its due: On Saturday, May 18, Bellevue’s Gunnar Nordstrom Gallery opens “The Art of Dr. Seuss,” a traveling exhibit featuring rare editions from his Secret Art, Unorthodox Taxidermy Sculpture and Archive Collections.

The museum carries Dr. Seuss artwork year-round, but this exhibit marks a special opportunity to view rare pieces never before displayed in the Pacific Northwest. The 21-piece collection will be on display through June 2 and is free and open to the public.

“This is the second Dr. Seuss traveling collection we’ve brought to the gallery, and I’m particularly excited to show sculptures from the Unorthodox Taxidermy collection, which are three dimensional sculptures of whimsical, inventive animals,” said gallery owner Gunnar Nordstrom. “Dr. Seuss has a special place in most everyone’s imagination and memories, and the Rare Editions Event is a wonderful way to further experience and reconnect with his magical world.”

On opening night (May 18), national artist representative and Kirkland resident Jeff Schuffman will present a brief lecture at the gallery at 7 p.m., providing insights into Geisel’s artistic endeavors, his unique vision and impact on American culture.

Gunnar Nordstrom Gallery, the only authorized fine art gallery to carry Seuss’ artwork in Washington, and will host the collection at its Bellevue Place gallery (800 Bellevue Way N.E. #111), which is open Mondays through Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. The works include patron, collaborative and commemorative proofs in a variety of mediums, and all works will be available for purchase on site.
