Three Local Teens Advance to August Wilson Monologue Competition Finals in New York

This week at Seattle Repertory Theatre, 10 Seattle-area high school students competed in the third annual Seattle August Wilson Monologue Competition finals. Each student performed a three-minute monologue from one of August Wilson’s plays to compete for cash prizes and a trip to New York City to participate in the National Finals on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre in May.

This year’s judges – Al Frank, Chic Street Man, Dena Levitin, G. Valmont Thomas, Misha Berson and Peggy Scales – selected the following winners and awarded them coveted prizes:

  • First place and $500 cash prize winner – Zenobia Taylor, 15, Garfield High School in Seattle, performed “Martha Pentecost” from Joe Turner’s Come and Gone
  • Second place and $250 cash prize winner – Reneeka Massey-Jones, 17, Timberline High School in Olympia, performed “Vera” from Seven Guitars
  • Third place and $100 cash prize winner – Alexandra Hope, 17, South Kitsap High School in Port Orchard, performed “Rose Maxson” from Fences

This marks the first time Seattle has sent three female finalists to the New York competition. More information about the competition is available online at www.seattlerep.org/AugustWilsonMonologues.
