If you can manage to run about three miles a week with your child now through the end of November, you still have time to participate in the Seattle Children’s Kids Marathon, a popular annual event.
The Kids Marathon is structured to allow children – in kindergarten through eighth grade – to complete a full 26.2 mile marathon at a rate that is fun and safe for their growing bodies … one mile at a time. It also encourages them to read 13 books and perform 13 good deeds.
Begin logging your training runs now, with the goal of completing 25 miles by the day of the Kids’ Marathon, which is Saturday, Nov. 30. On that day, registered kids will run the final 1.2 miles together to reach their marathon goal.
Read about the experience from parent reviewer Erika Lee Bigelow, who had been casting about for a way to interest her 7-year-old daughter in running and ended up getting the Girl Scout troop involved. She offers insight into the Seattle Center course and the excitement of the roaring crowd at the end.
