A student in Kirkland was voted to become one of the five national finalists of Google's seventh annual Doodle 4 Google competition, a contest open to K-12 students across the United States to redesign the Google logo inspired by the theme "If I could invent one thing to make the world a better place…"
Renaise Kim, the super talented 15-year-old from Lake Washington High School, became Washington's state winner in the competition and her doodle, "Brighter World through Binoculars" was voted by the public to become the national finalist for the entire eighth and ninthe grade age group in the 2014 Doodle 4 Google competition.
Renaise's doodle was chosen from more than 100,000 entries received this year. After the announcement of 50 state winners at the end of April, millions of people across the U.S. voted for their favorites. Google recently hosted all 50 state winners at its headquarters in Mountain View, California, for a day of art and technology workshops, fun activities — and the announcement of the finalists and the national winner.
For her achievement, Renaise will take home a $5,000 scholarship she'll be able to use for college, as well as an Android tablet.
This year's winner is a New York student, Audrey Zhang. She will now work with Google's team of professional doodlers to animate her complex doodle — "Back to Mother Nature" which will be displayed on the Google homepage on June 9. She will also take home a $30,000 college scholarship and her school will receive a $50,000 Google for Education grant toward the establishment and improvement of a computer lab or technology program.
