Several kid-friendly organizations are offering sensory hours, special admission discounts and more in recognition of Autism Awareness Month in April.
Early Admission and Discounts at The Museum of Flight
The Museum of Flight is opening its doors early, at 9 a.m., on Saturday, April 19 for families with children who have autism. Early entry will give these children an opportunity to explore the museum before the general public is admitted at 10 a.m.
As well, the families will be offered the museum's group rates of $16 for adults (regularly $19) and $9 for youth (regularly $11); children younger than 5 are free. There will be a 10 percent discount on merchandise purchased in the Museum Store and informational tables representing various autism support and education organizations. Special Museum Hours for Kids with Autism
Hands On Children's Museum in Olympia offers "Special Nights of Play" events to help make the museum accessible and interactive for children with autism or other special needs. These events provide a private, less stimulating time to experience the museum with other families who may share the same life experience. A special program rate is available, as well as a Sensory Friendly Story Guide. The next event is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. Visit www.hocm.org/special-night-play to learn more.
On the first Saturday of each month, Seattle Children's Museum opens its doors at 8:30 a.m. for children on the autism spectrum. During this early entry time, the lights are dimmed and noisy exhibits are turned down in order to help kids feel more comfortable. During the early open time (8:30 to 10 a.m.) the museum does not run its normal music or sounds or its PA system. The next event is scheduled for Saturday, May 3.
